How to Make Delicious Pita Saga Bati Basa

Pita Saga Bati Basa is a traditional dish from the state of Odisha in India. It is a healthy and nutritious dish that is made from a combination of vegetables and lentils. Here is how you can make this delicious dish at home.

Ingredients:

For the Bati:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup semolina
  • 1/4 cup ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

For the Saga:

  • 2 cups chopped mixed vegetables (potatoes, carrots, beans, peas)
  • 1 cup split yellow lentils (toor dal)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2-3 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Water as needed

Instructions:

  1. To make the Bati, combine the whole wheat flour, semolina, ghee, and salt in a bowl. Mix well and add enough water to make a firm dough.
  2. Divide the dough into small balls and shape them into flat discs. Prick the discs with a fork to prevent them from puffing up during cooking.
  3. Heat a tawa or griddle and place the Bati on it. Cook them on medium heat until they are golden brown on both sides. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. To make the Saga, heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Fry until the mustard seeds start to splutter.
  5. Add the chopped onions, green chillies, and curry leaves to the pan. Fry until the onions turn translucent.
  6. Add the mixed vegetables, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt to the pan. Fry for a few minutes until the vegetables are cooked.
  7. Add the lentils and enough water to cover the mixture. Bring it to a boil and then let it simmer until the lentils are cooked and the water is absorbed.
  8. Add garam masala powder to the pan and mix well. Cook for a few more minutes.
  9. Serve hot with Bati.

Tips:

  • You can add any vegetables of your choice to the Saga.
  • Make sure to prick the Bati with a fork before cooking to prevent them from puffing up.
  • Adjust the spice levels according to your taste.
