If you are a fan of Indian cuisine, then you have likely tasted Vermicelli Upma. This dish is a classic South Indian breakfast dish that is made with roasted vermicelli, vegetables, and a blend of spices. Here is how you can make this delicious dish at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup vermicelli
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp chana dal
  • 1 tbsp urad dal
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2-3 green chillies, slit
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions:

  1. Heat a pan and add the vermicelli to it. Roast the vermicelli until it turns golden brown. Remove the roasted vermicelli from the pan and set it aside.
  2. In the same pan, heat the oil and add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, chana dal, and urad dal. Fry them until the mustard seeds start to splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onions, green chillies, and curry leaves to the pan. Fry them until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Add the mixed vegetables, turmeric powder, and salt to the pan. Fry them for a few minutes until the vegetables are cooked.
  5. Add the roasted vermicelli to the pan and mix well. Add 2 cups of water and mix again.
  6. Cover the pan and let the mixture cook for 5-7 minutes until the vermicelli is cooked and the water is absorbed.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Tips:

  • To make the dish spicier, add more green chillies.
  • You can use any vegetables of your choice in the dish.
  • Do not overcook the vermicelli, or it will become mushy.
